Memo to Brian Chesky · Airbnb India · October 2026

Airbnb India: 10x revenue by 2030

Own the Indian group trip, at home and abroad. Current growth gets us about halfway. Four focused bets earn the rest, funded one year at a time.

₹0.25B → ₹2.5B

India revenue, 2026 → 2030 stretch target (~$2.6M → ~$26M)

₹1.6–1.8B

Realistic floor (~7x) if the bets only partly land

78% a year

Growth that 10x needs. Current momentum gives 35–48%.

~₹1.8B

4-year investment (~$19M), released yearly only if gates are met

Where the 10x comes from

2030 revenue, ₹ billion, base case

Start and end Momentum (happens anyway) Plan (we must earn it) Realistic floor

Four buckets: who travels, and where

Each booking falls in exactly one bucket

① Indians abroad

+₹0.50B

Lead here. One trip abroad is worth 4–5 trips at home, and it uses homes Airbnb already has.

  • Campaigns for family and friend groups to Dubai, Bali, Vietnam, Japan and Europe
  • Boutique hotels where homes are restricted (Thailand, Singapore)
  • Rupee pricing, visa-ready confirmations, kitchens for veg families
Target: ~1% of Indian leisure trips abroad (~0.16% today)

② Indians in India

+₹0.47B

Weekend and holiday getaways for groups from the top 8 metros.

  • Verified homes in 3–4 corridors first (Lonavala, Coorg, Himachal, Goa)
  • Villa brands list on Airbnb for quality group supply
  • Brand spend only after trust targets are met
Target: ~1.5% of India's homestay and villa bookings

③ The world in India

+₹0.09B

Foreign tourists and NRIs visiting home. Kept light on purpose.

  • Foreign arrivals are still below 2019
  • Form C filing helper so hosts accept foreign guests
Target: inbound revenue ~4x

④ Beyond stays

+₹0.25B

New revenue lines Airbnb is already building globally.

  • Experiences and Services in 5 Indian cities
  • Boutique and independent hotels in India
Target: ₹0.25B from zero
Shared foundation
TrustVerified homes, AI photo-vs-reality checks with human review
PayUPI first, with split pay so the whole group pays its share
PlanAI group plans shared to WhatsApp, in Hindi and Hinglish
SupplyVilla-brand partners, registration and GST tools for hosts

Sequence and gates

Each phase unlocks the next tranche only if its gate is met

First 90 days

Validate

Pilot in Mumbai and Bengaluru against Delhi NCR and Hyderabad. Six small bets, one per link: groups, pay, trust, abroad, supply.

Gate: +15% bookings vs control, payback under 18 months
2027

Prove

Trips abroad and split pay across the top 8 metros. Fix trust in the getaway corridors.

Target ₹0.45B · floor ₹0.40B
2028

Scale

Domestic brand spend, villa brands, Hindi app, Experiences.

Target ₹0.79B · floor ₹0.63B
2029–30

Expand

Tier-2 cities, NRIs, hotels in India. Reserve levers if growth slows.

2029 ₹1.41B · 2030 ₹2.5B (floor ₹1.6B)

What could go wrong, and when we stop

RiskResponse
Momentum fades faster than expectedReserve levers worth ~₹0.4B: work and long stays, investing in a villa brand
Groups are not the wedgeSwitch to Indians abroad only: cheapest, highest value
State rules remove supply (Goa)Registration tools for hosts; registered villa brands
Price war with MakeMyTrip or OYONo fee cuts. Compete where homes beat hotels: groups, longer stays, abroad

We stop the extra spend, never Airbnb India.

  1. Feature hurts conversion → switch it off
  2. Bet misses its target → end it, move the budget
  3. Group wedge fails (lift under 5%) → abroad only
  4. Payback over 18 months at two yearly gates → withhold next tranche

Two readings in a row, judged against control cities. Trust and safety commitments are never rolled back.

Not doing: weddings, package tours, budget rooms, fee increases, selling through MakeMyTrip.

A note on the baseline

This memo uses the brief's ₹250M. A listing-based estimate suggests Airbnb's India marketplace revenue may be 5–30x higher; ₹250M is close to the Indian entity's reported service revenue. The plan is built on ratios, so it holds either way. If the true base is larger, I would recommend a ~5x target.
